Don’t Eat the (Contaminated) Tomatoes
If you’ve bought tomatoes at the store recently you may want to throw them out, just to be safe. The FDA has issued a warning due to some types of tomatoes being contaminated with a rare form of Salmonella bacteria (serotype Saintpaul).
Contaminated tomato types: raw red plum, raw red roma, raw round red
Safe (currently, according to the FDA) tomato types: cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home
All suspect tomatoes should already have been removed from stores shelves.
West Virginia is one of the states where tomatoes have not been associated with the outbreak, but consumers should still be wary since restaurant and grocery store chains may purchase their tomatoes from other areas which have been associated.
