Faculty Senate Votes “No Confidence”
The WVU Faculty Senate met last night and voted “no confidence” in WVU President Mike Garrison over a recent degree scandal, recommending that Garrison resign to save the school’s reputation. The scandal surrounds an executive MBA degree granted to Heather Bresch, daughter of Governor Joe Manchin, old friend of Mike Garrison, and chief operating officer of Mylan Pharmaceuticals (a major donor to WVU). An independent committee found that the granting of the degree 10 years after the fact “reflected poor judgment” and that the reasons given for granting the degree (such as work-for-credit agreements and missing records) were all false. Some of that information came from Heather Bresch through phone conversations with Garrison’s chief of staff Craig Walker.
The faculty senate, however, has no power to oust the President, and the Governor and Board of Governor’s (appointed by the Governor) are standing firmly behind the President. Garrison has stated that he has no intention of resigning, and that people should focus instead on WVU’s future.

While flipping through radio stations I heard on NPR (this morning) that the faculty senate also voted “no confidence” when Garrison was being considered as a candidate for WVU president. Hmm.
Yep — they felt that the selection process was basically rigged in his favor, and weren’t happy about him getting the position since he had so many political ties. Some have pointed out that something like this is exactly what they were afraid might happen.
