photo credit: jslanderOne of my secret pleasures when it comes to reading blogs is finding ones about food. Cheap and easy recipes, fancy desserts, restaurant reviews (especially if it’s places nearby where I can go to eat), simple tricks for the kitchen: I enjoy them all. So here I’ve collected a few of my recent finds or common reads for food blogs in, near, around, or about WV.

1) The WV Hot Dog Blog: A blog about the phenomenon which is a WV hot dog. Visits and reviews many different places which serve them, and has for a couple years now. If you’re looking for a WV hot dog check them out!

2) Kitchen Geeking: A blog written by a transplanted Morgantownian, now writing from Charleston, WV, covering cook at home recipes and restaurant reviews wherever the author happens to eat. Great pictures of the food, and a fun conversational style.

3) Dining in Da Burgh: A site which reviews places to eat in Pittsburgh, PA (about an hour away from Motown — heck, you could wait that long for a table at some restaurants). The rating system includes such gems as “Holy mother of God was that food or just a piece of heaven” and “Only if your date is gorgeous and he/she wants to eat there.”

4) Roadfood.com: This site is attempting to post reviews (with some menu items and pictures) of as many small, local restaurants as it can. A good summary site if you’re looking for someplace to eat that’s not a chain, and isn’t too expensive. I’ve linked to the page for WV specifically, which currently has 16 entries.

5) Sense to Save has this post: Another Pittsburgh blog, this one mostly focuses on money saving goals, but this post about creating restaurant-esque dishes at home for a weekend with friends was fascinating. It includes a cost comparison to show how much money was saved.

6) Slice, the Pizza blog, has this post on regional pizza styles, including “Ohio Valley-Style” which I remember fondly from Elm Grove (Wheeling) at DiCarlo’s. You can read more about Ohio Valley-Style pizza here at Mine Road as well.

7) The WV Blogger, blogging from Greenbrier county, does not usually post about food, but I’ve linked here to a long page of amazing melon sculptures.

Both Ed Levine’s New York Eats and the NY Times have articles this week talking about how many food writers have to struggle with their weight. While I love reading foodie blogs, I can see how it would be hard to keep up and still stick to a reasonable diet! Thanks for all the entertainment, guys!
