That “inbred” look?

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that a casting call for a film Shelter featuring Julianne Moore is asking for extras with “that ‘inbred’ look” to play West Virginians:

“Extraordinarily tall or short. Unusual body shapes, even physical abnormalities as long as there is normal mobility. Unusual facial features, especially eyes.”

The announcement requests “a 9-12-year-old Caucasian girl with an other-worldly look to her.”

“Could be an albino or something along those lines — she’s someone who is visually different and therefore has a closer contact to the gods and to magic. ‘Regular-looking’ children should not attend this open call.’”

The casting firm says it is only trying to fulfill the needs of the script, and does not intend to cause any offense. Some people in West Virginia have found the insinuations here “unfortunate.”

  1. I don’t think there is anything wrong with casting for inbreds, freaks, Rosie O’Donnell fans, etc. Those people have gotsta work to. People complain when Hollywood only wants thin, pretty actresses. Now they are complaining when Hollywood wants an albino 6-year-old with a momma for a grandmomma.
